Dubbed "an antiquarian exposition," the legendary Woodstock music festival was held from August 15 to 18 in 1969 on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York. Despite rain that led to muddy conditions, music fans from all over the country - and even world - swarmed to attend. Later documentary film and live album releases only increased the lore and legacy of the festival.
Featured acts included Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young; Santana, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and a six-months pregnant Joan Baez. Remembered for art, music, and near-ubiquitous drug use, the Woodstock festival was etched into history as a landmark event in the Hippie movement. The site of the original Woodstock festival was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
